High School Administrative Assistant Colleen Thaxton joined Sequoyah over the summer of 2023 and is excited to be a new member of the community. Thaxton graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Child Development and a double minor in Ethnic Studies and Psychology. Thaxton noted that “studying child development and psychology and ethnic studies, as a whole, has really helped me…know how to work with people better.” A native Pasadenan, Thaxton recently returned to the city after working in the Parks and Recreation Department in San Luis Obispo in a “…department [that] ran a before and after school care program at five elementary school sites.” Of her return to Pasadena, Thaxton expressed it “feels good to be back home.”
Thaxton heard about Sequoyah through her neighbor, an admissions director. She is attracted to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and was excited that the DEI work Sequoyah does is “very obvious from the website” and is “a core foundation of the school.” Thaxton was originally thinking of becoming a preschool teacher, but became interested in administrative work.
Thaxton has a number of hobbies. They include gathering with her friends once a week for a fun and thrilling game of Dungeons & Dragons, sitting in the backyard and reading a light romance novel in the sun, and enjoying an occasional sandwich. She recommends Perry’s Joint Cafe in Altadena, and noted that “they’re opening another one…right around the corner [of] Lincoln and Orange Grove.” So, if you are ever in Altadena, stop by Perry’s and order a tasty sandwich! Thaxton also delights in an occasional cup of tea or coffee (which she enjoys equally), and recommends Highlight Coffee in Pasadena.
Thaxton would “love to give a big thank you to everybody for…making me feel so welcome and like just part of the group” as soon as she arrived at Sequoyah. Stop by the main office to chat with Thaxton about sandwiches, pistachio ice cream, and your favorite book, or just to say hello!
