Sequoyah has been changing a lot lately, but one thing remains consistent–the quality of the teachers. While the school has said goodbye to some old faces, it has also brought in some new ones. One new member of the team is Nia Williams, a graduate of the University of Virginia, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in “Arts Administration with a pathway in Music and African American Studies.” She moved to Los Angeles about a year and a half ago and has been loving it. While Sequoyah is her first teaching job, she has held many other interesting positions, among them operation manager at a TikTok influencer’s house.
This year she is teaching the Z Block Storytelling & Historical Memory. She loves this class, and referred to the students as “very energetic … very bright and excited to learn.” In mod four she will be teaching the Songwriting Z block, which she is very excited about. With Physics teacher Roy Nyberg leaving, Williams will be taking over his 10th-grade Advisory and 11th-grade SIP team.
Williams picked Sequoyah because she “loved the mission of the school.” She noted, “Diversity, social justice, and community engagement are things that have always been important to me, and I think Sequoyah truly embodies those values.” She hopes “to bring a new perspective as a Black Woman and a Gen Z teacher.” Teaching is a newer thing for her but she is enjoying it so far and is looking forward to future classes, so let’s give her a warm welcome!
