In the heart of Pasadena—and only a short eight minute drive from Sequoyah’s high school—stands Vroman’s Bookstore, a landmark amongst all the independent bookshops in Pasadena. Established by Adam Clark Vroman in 1894, Vroman’s has been admired by both locals and visitors for years. This is not just your ordinary bookstore, but an experience combining book-hunting, author signings and exquisitely brewed coffee. a recent addition that has taken Vroman’s up a level.
Vroman’s holds the esteemed title of being the oldest bookstore in Pasadena, making it a landmark. It has been a constant presence in the lives of many, including mine. I’ve been a patron since as far back as I can remember. It’s where I source all the birthday gifts for my friends, the cards for my cousins. The bookstore’s shelves, lined with an extensive collection of books spanning various genres, offer something for everyone, making it my go-to destination for thoughtful gifts.
Adam Clark Vroman, a man with a passion for both literature and photography, was the mastermind behind this beloved establishment. Before venturing into the world of books, Vroman was known for his work as a photographer. His transition from capturing images to curating stories on paper was a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and love for the written word. Today, his legacy lives on in the form of a bookstore that has become an integral part of the Pasadena community.
One of the most recent and exciting developments at Vroman’s is the addition of Tepito Coffee, a coffee shop that has quickly become a local favorite. Over the years, Vroman’s has hosted several coffee shops, but Tepito, which opened its doors in December 2022, has been my absolute favorite. Co-owned by Richard Cabral and Jose Arellano, this amazing coffee shop began as a series of pop-ups in East LA in 2021. However, it wasn’t until the opportunity arose at Vroman’s, following the closure of the previous vendor, that Cabral and Arellano decided to take a big step and officially open Tepito Coffee. Vroman’s regulars fell in love with it instantly–you could even say it was a matcha made in heaven! It provides shoppers with the perfect combination of books and the delight of coffee. The coffee shop’s welcoming employees and high-quality brews offer a unique experience, making it a must-visit spot for anyone walking through Vroman’s doors.
As I take a moment to reflect on my countless visits to Vroman’s, it’s clear this place is more than just a bookstore–it’s a testament to the power of community, the enduring love for books, and the appreciation for a cup of coffee. With its remarkable history and commitment to evolving with the times, Vroman’s Bookstore remains a huge part of the culture in Pasadena, where tradition seamlessly meets innovation, making it my absolute favorite place to spend both my time and (lots of) my money.
I enjoyed reading this. It’s clear and well-written.
