The new film The Magnificent Seven, a remake of the 1960 John Sturges western of the same name (itself a version of the 1954 Akira Kurosawa masterpiece The Seven Samurai), offers a new take on the old west, yet remains deeply authentic to the genre. It uses the original type of shots that the old movies used and the same kind of music. Director Antoine Fuqua offers up the same characters from the original, but with twists in their races.
Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt offer two good performances for the movie that keep the boring parts fun and make the plentiful action even better. The knife-, axe-, and gun-slingers make the movie one of the best movies of the fall. Haley Bennett also offers a good take on the powerful female role, in a movie full of men.
