Subnautica is an open-world survival game, made by Unknown Worlds Entertainment, that takes place in the oceans of an alien planet. This game is one of the most unique survival games you can find and has a lot of unexpected surprises up its sleeve. A compelling story, riveting gameplay, and a beautiful world make this game one of the best in its genre. You have one goal: to get off of the planet.
The best part of the game by far is the environment. It is creative and different from almost any other game on the market. There are around 35 biomes in the game, each with unique creatures to find. Some of the biomes are almost completely safe, while others have harsh environments to navigate through and many harmful creatures swimming around. The creatures, many unique to specific biomes, range from tiny fish to giant creatures called leviathans, which are basically just giant sea snakes who really want to eat you. All of these creatures add to what may be this game’s best part, which is its subtle horror aspects. This is where the game thrives, with exploration mixed with risk.
Another great part about this game is its progression, which flows incredibly well. The main goal is to get off the planet you crashed down on. To find a way out, you need to go deeper and deeper. To get deeper, you need to find and make vehicles, tools, and upgrades–and to get those, you need to find a blueprint and materials. It’s simple, but it is very satisfying to experience. It keeps the pacing strong from start to finish, unlike many other survival games.
The game still has a few problems though. For one, due to the large size of the map, there can often be graphical problems, which can get annoying depending on your settings. Despite a few other minor issues, Subnautica is a great game for anybody that enjoys survival games. It stands above many others, even its own sequel. If you are feeling adventurous, give it a try!
