On October 15th, Sequoyah had its first-ever Fall Function dance! This dance had the theme of fall with some Halloween vibes, and K-8 alumni that were at or under the age of 18 were also invited. The Stewardship Chair of the Big Events Committee, Greta Simpson ’23, referred to the dance as a wonderful place to meet new people. She talked about how this was the committee’s lowest-budget event, but noted, “It will be fun! Everyone should go to have the best night of their life.” This dance took place at the K8 campus.
Many people needed clarification as to why the name was changed from Homecoming to Fall Function. This is because a Homecoming dance revolves around the first football game of the season. In this tradition, the school will have the game and invite alumni to watch it. After the game, there is a dance. This would not work for Sequoyah because there is no football team, and it would be weird to have 23-year-olds dancing with 14-year-olds.
The main music for this dance was provided by a new DJ whom the school had never hired before, in addition to three live songs performed by a group of students. Members of the band include Bug Nachmanoff ’24, Magnus Bjorgum ’25, Wyatt Muncy ’25, Tiffany Otsubo ’23, and Xavy Kelly ’25. For most people at the dance, this was the highlight. Rachel Youngstrom ’26 stated that she “loved the band and I would like more of them at events.”
The DJ was not as huge of a hit though. According to Sofie Wilson ’23, Adrian Arida ’25, Simon Listiak ’23, and Youngstrom, the music selection was lackluster. As Arida added, “The music was bad. The DJ did not take requests. There was too much 2010s pop music.”
One of the major hits from the dance was a game of four-way chess on the picnic tables. This caught the attention of almost everyone and was very popular. Many people such as Youngstrom and Arida even thought it would be cool to have a game night next year instead of a dance, something like a fall festival. Youngstrum even stated that in the future she would prefer to have a game night type thing, or just something with more structured things to do.
Youngstrom also noted that it was just a bit too loud and you had to yell in order to hear each other speak. So maybe in the future, there could be a place away from the music where you could hang out. Overall the dance was a good idea and with a few tweaks, it could be even better next year!
